Telecommuting – It’s Not Just for City Folks

The first big snowstorm of the season is upon us and you live out in the country. Maybe you’re not completely out in the boonies, but you’d have to face some pretty treacherous conditions to make it into work when a big snow storm hits. Your employer doesn’t want you to risk life and limb just to make it to work, however you know there are things you need to get done at the office if only you had a way to connect into your computer. “Telecommuting” is the answer that you’re looking for.

Telecommuting is simply a way of connecting into your place of work from a remote location and it can be provided in many forms and may be referred to in many different ways. “Remote Web Workplace,” “Remote Anywhere Access,” “Citrix Remote Desktop,” “VPN Tunnels,” and “Remote Desktop Connection” are some of the names you may have heard in the past. All of these solutions effectively accomplish the same goal: to get you into those programs and files that you need to access in order to get things done.

A good remote connectivity solution and working game plan should include all of the following:

• A secure connection into the workplace.

• A stable and fast internet connection at work and at home.

• A reliable, protected computer to connect in from.

• A system at the workplace that is turned on and waiting for your connection into it.

• A written set of instructions (with pictures, if necessary) that are clear and easy to follow.

• Periodic testing of the remote connection process to ensure it is working when you need it to during an emergency.

Think of it like an emergency power generator. You don’t want to wait until the big blizzard hits to find out whether you can put it into action. If you have questions about remote connectivity options that may be available to you and your business, feel free to contact us and we will be happy to answer them.

Whether you’re out on the internet or out on the icy roads, let’s be careful out there!
