Learn how to keep yourself safe from this new scam going state to state!
In recent months, the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has received over 2,000 complaints about a new smishing scam targeting road toll services in at least three states. This scam, which began in early March 2024, involves fraudulent text messages claiming that recipients owe money for unpaid tolls.
What is Smishing?
Smishing is a type of social engineering attack that uses fake text messages to trick people into downloading malware, sharing sensitive information, or sending money to cybercriminals. The term “smishing” combines “SMS” (short message service, or colloquially, text messages) and “phishing”, which generally pertains to social engineering attacks intended to get you to click links that capture your login data or payment info.
How the Scam Works
The fraudulent texts claim that the recipient has an outstanding toll amount, typically around $10-$20, and directs them to visit a fake website to settle the balance. The texts use almost identical language and impersonate the state’s toll service name. The phone numbers provided in the texts appear to change between states, making it difficult to track the scam.
Example of a Scam Text:
(State Toll Service Name): We've noticed an outstanding toll amount of $12.51 on your record. To avoid a late fee of $50.00, visit https://myturnpiketollservices.com to settle your balance.
What to Do If You Receive a Smishing Text
If you receive one of these texts, follow these steps to protect yourself:
- File a Complaint: Report the text to the IC3 atĀ www.ic3.gov. Be sure to include the phone number from where the text originated and the website listed within the text.
- Verify Your Account: Check your account using the toll service’s legitimate website.
- Contact Customer Service: Reach out to the toll service’s customer service phone number for assistance.
- Delete the Text: Remove any smishing texts you receive.
- Secure Your Information: If you clicked any link or provided your information, take steps to secure your personal information and financial accounts. Dispute any unfamiliar charges.
Stay Vigilant
As this scam continues to spread from state to state, it’s crucial to stay vigilant and protect yourself from these fraudulent texts. By following the steps outlined above, you can help safeguard your personal information and avoid falling victim to smishing scams.
